“Part of the madness is to live as if the future were
more important than the present moment, which is how most people
live. Completely insane, so you miss the aliveness of life
for some projected future aliveness of fulfillment. There
is no future, there is noly this, the present moment."

Summary
4 years in the making What About Me? has
been a total bombardment of the senses. We took on such an ambitious
concept with little idea of what would happen. Only a faith that
if we stayed with it, it’d work out.
"The backing track
for this chapter was written one windy night in my van in Cadaques
Spain. I had copied the riff from a sample of some Thai instrument.
Sounded very different on my guitar, and as I played it to other
musicians around the world it took on a whole new sound. Later on,
Nigel (my constant support and musical genius) told me he thought
I’d ripped it from knight Rider! I probably did without realising.
Certainly doesn’t sound like that in the end. The original
lyrical concept for this track was to look at the issues of communication.
As we started investigating and composing lyrics the idea of questioning
the quality of our communication both with others but more importantly
with ourselves, became our primary interest. " Duncan Bridgeman

“The problem is you have to learn your way through these
things, you gotta fight your way through these things – and
the big problem is when they medicate teenagers and children, often
at the request of the expert opinion of some fucking teacher that
is having a hard time with a creative child. Now when you medicate
a kid through those years that kid is not learning how to deal with
depression or anger. The discomfort that the child’s depression
and anger brings the parent or teacher – the idea that they
would medicate him, is really a selfish thing – it is really
the teacher’s problem, the parent’s problem –
so what they wind up doing is medicating these kids, and then the
kids find their way of course like other teenagers into self-medication
along with that medication and that is a recipe for disaster! And
all these suitors in Columbine, and the kid up in Oregon and the
kid down south are all on anti-depressants throughout their teenage
years – and what happened was that they got to a point where
the rage just blew – if your kid got a lot of energy –
find something to do with the energy – get of your ass Mom,
Dad – do something rather than put a pill into their mouth”

Summary
Examining gender and equality issues
We live in a world of
short-cuts and instant fixes, but even though it seems so natural
to avoid pain with a pill 1 Giant Leap question whether we need
to substitute our Prozac for self-examination and realize, perhaps,
that although we each carry our own wounds, the trials of life have
sculpted us into the uniquely beautiful people we are today.
This episode really does have an all star cast. Actor Tim
Robbins, plus comedians Billy Connolly and Stephen
Fry all make an appearance to discuss being vulnerable,
and how it's more of a strength than people realise.
Musically the theme is tackled with a simple guitar loop that K
D Lang, Eddi Reader and Police drummer
Stuart Copeland all add layers of sound to: it's a haunting
piece that really capture the imagination.
Of course there is a bit more travelling around the world for producers
Jamie and Duncan including Mali, Hawaii and LA!

“When you see old people, they have made it through –
maybe they love each other, maybe they don’t, but they have
weathered this difficult thing – it is the hardest thing you’ll
do. The immense story that must lie behind these two people together
- take them and just talk to them, it will be an epic no matter
who they are – even if they have lived in the same room for
83 years, I am telling you that lifestory is a psycho drama, it
is an epic”

Summary
How we mistake love for all sorts of other emotions
The secret of a happy
and loving marriage has remained one of the great, undiscovered
mysteries of the human race. 1 Giant Leap travel the globe to find
out what Love’s got to do with it? And are we giving or taking?
Love is a tricky thing
isn't it? As usual the boys are off around the world exploring different
musical and social takes on relationships. Do we all confuse love
with need (it's complicated OK) and how do we express that?

“Everybody
wants to behave just like an American, it’s amazing. Amazing
to me I don’t think they are always happy people there, they
should be unhappy because of what is happening in the community
there, it is not enough to have money to be happy. Money doesn’t
make people happy, it is peace of mind we have, and I would be supplied
if they had peace of mind because there is no family, individualistic
life, everyone is running after money, no time to sit down - be
friends, it’s a disaster!

“I don’t think people could follow to
the track of understanding Freedom as I do what I like – I
don’t really think that’s freedom as you are still bound
by your desires, so where is the freedom? Freedom would be that
you understand your desires, the compulsion of those desires, the
addiction of that – and you are able to transcend that. Otherwise
your passion is determining your behaviour although you are saying
it is Freedom.”

Summary
How we cope with death, loss and God
Are you scared of getting
old? Another theme that unites mankind across the world is how we
deal with being old. It inspires a more reflective blues song that
combines a Santana guitar solo over stunningly evocative harmonies
from Mali and Tibet.
And again the boys travel
around the world to add to the track recording Brazilian beats and
a Michael Franti bridge. Of course the show would not be complete
without some profound insight in to getting old straight from the
mouths of Bob Geldof and Frank Skinner no less!
