What do you get when you combine the "live fast, die young" lifestyles of both motocross racing and heavy-metal music? More than likely, something that closely resembles Midway's current extreme sports project, Freestyle MetalX, a game that features nine professional motocross riders, massive environments, loads of insane stunts, and more grinding guitars than you can shake a stick at. We recently got to take a look at a previewable build of the PlayStation 2 version of the game, and though it has a few rough spots, Freestyle MetalX is shaping up to be a promising title.

Freestyle MetalX could really shake things up when it drops next month. Fans of motocross action will be thrilled to air it out without the restrictions of a track or circuit. Extreme gaming fans will get a charge out of doing their tricking with some seriously fast and powerful machines. If your racing or stunt gaming has become a little too routine, get ready for some high-speed, high-altitude action.

Freestyle MetalX is Tony Hawk on a motocross bike, plain and simple. Sure, there are a few differences due to the nature of the sport (i.e. the vehicle and environments), but the core gameplay is the same; you are placed in a open environment and must complete a list of goals that range from scoring a set amount of points to completing miscellaneous goals like knocking someone off a ledge.

Game Zone
GameZone.com was given the opportunity to strap on a helmet in the beta for the PlayStation2 and rather than finding a game full of horrific violence, and blood patches across the pavement, found a program that has attitude and fun. The graphical elements are very well done. The environments are lush, diverse and interactive to some extent. Bust up a porch or drive through a pasture fence and the damage remains. Freestyle MetalX does contain some elements that may make parents cringe, but they are all in fun and mostly keep in the same vein as the zany, over-the-top style of other Midway sports games. The beta was far from complete, but from what there was, this looks to be a well-designed, graphically exciting foray into the world of motocross.

Game Horizon
Freestyle MetalX will feature 16 riders including 9 top pros leading the sport: Clifford “The Flyin’ Hawaiian” Adoptante, Ronnie Faisst, “Mad” Mike Jones, Jeff Tilton, Nate Adams, Kenny Bartram, Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg, Trevor Vines and Kris Rourke. A killer soundtrack is also going to included with bands such as, Motley Crue, Megadeath, and Motorhead
